7 Savvy Public Speaking Survival Tips
I used to be terrified of public speaking - now it’s natural and fun.
Dry mouth, heart fluttering, sweaty palms, blank mind - yeah I’ve been there! It’s easy to be afraid of public speaking. But I was never content with simply overcoming the fear. I wanted to be a great public speaker. What I needed was a way to calm down and apply simple techniques and strategies to talk like a pro.
When I’d learned to relax (more on that later) I learned and applied the following four steps:
- Reassure your audience - they need to know you know your stuff and you are human!
- Hook them - be interesting and relevant. Tell them why what you are saying is relevant to them.
- Inspire them - give them information and ways of seeing that are new and applicable.
- Leave them on a high - tell them a story them encapsulates your central message.
How do you become confident enough to apply these four steps?
Here’s some practical advice. Some have to do with the way you think about your public presentations and others on how you can start to change the way you feel about them.
Tip One
Breathe your way to calm. When you breathe out you relax that’s why people sigh when they’re stressed.
Breathing in without breathing out causes hyperventilation and worsens anxiety. Just before your speech take five minutes and breathe in to the count of seven and out to the count of eleven (quick count-not seconds!). On the out breath, hold it a second before breathing in again. This will produce a quick and lasting calming effect. Remember extending the out breath calms you down.
Tip Two
Yes, you have a responsibility as the presenter but relax you don’t carry all the responsibility. Presenting is a team effort. Audiences are responsible for politeness, extending their attention, interacting with you and attempting to learn. It’s not all you - it’s a meeting of two halves. Never mind how they judge you. How do you judge them?
Tip Three
Speaking is really storytelling. Use metaphor and stories. We all experience life metaphorically. The most technical and logical person spends at least two hours a night dreaming! Talk details if necessary but present patterns with metaphors. People from four to 104 love stories. Use em!
Tip four
Captivate attention and engage your audience by using words that evoke all the senses. Describe how things look, sound, feel, smell and taste. Paint pictures and sensations in their minds with your words. Public speaking (like radio) is cinema of the mind.
Tip Five
Vary your voice tonality and speed of delivery. Keep them alert and engaged! Convey energy when need be and slow down when you need to ‘draw them in close.’ You are the conductor to their orchestra. And be sure to pepper your talk with humor. Your willingness to be funny shows personal confidence and confidence is contagious.
Tip Six
Tell them what you’re going to tell them (agenda). Then tell them (the body of your presentation). And then tell them what they got (conclusion/wrap it up). Don’t forget to sell your sizzle!
Tip Seven
Watch and learn from other great speakers until compelling, relaxed speaking is a part of you.
Rehearse positively. You need to rehearse how you’re going to feel as well as what you are going to present. Don’t think about your forthcoming presentation while feeling nervous, as this creates an instinctive association between fear and presenting. This natural negative self-hypnosis is very common with nervous speakers.
Hypnotically rehearse your speech while feeling relaxed. This produces the right ‘blueprint’ in your mind. In fact when you do this enough times it actually becomes hard to be nervous!
All great speakers know how to use great self-hypnotic rehearsal. Hypnosis changes attitudes and can bring emotion under control. I used hypnosis, to change my instincts around public speaking. Now I just can’t get nervous whether it’s 50 or 500 people. The world needs great communicators and is waiting to hear your words. Go for it!

The Key to REAL BUSINESS GROWTH – The LoA in ACTION
Do you know the powerful mantra used by many conscious or spiritual business owners and solo entrepreneurs that practice the universal principles such as the Law of Attraction to grow their business?
“What I seek is now seeking me”. The Clients I seek are now seeking me; the Abundance I seek is now seeking me; The Contracts I seek are now seeking me. You get the idea!
In the “Money, Marketing and Mindset” arena, there is another super-boosted factor that will truly surpass all of your dreams and expectations. And as usual the answer is located INSIDE of you.
So, let’s look at what is this key factor to tremendous success. I call it “Passionata”. You can find it easily with this short MeditAction™:
Get relaxed and comfortable on your chair. Allow 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted meditation. Close you eyes, Take a few deep breaths. Turn your focus inward. Ask yourself gently:
*What am I really passionate about? I was born to solve a problem and help others with a precise solution. – What is it?
Get a sense or a feel for it. Ask to have clear pictures, ideas, feelings or words pop up in your head. Don’t try to control the images with your mind, relax, go with the flow of what you receive. Don’t judge anything, just get the information.
Money will literally hunt you down when you get PASSIONATE about your solution and CONVINCED that it is the best way to help people with this type of problem. So, find out what your ideal clients problems are and get specific about what your solution is.
- Visualize the people you are meant to help. These people have a pain. Feel their despair and need for your product or service. Really SEE them. There are thousands, even millions of people waiting for YOU.
- Imagine a cursor on a special machine, the “belief-ometer”, to rate how much you feel you have the solution for them, and how much enthusiasm you have about solving their problems.
- Look at what the “belief-ometer” is showing you; it has a scale from 0 - 10. 0 shows no belief in your service/product, 10 shows your total excitement and full conviction that they NEED it. What is the number you read? If the number is not 10, can you push the cursor a little to make it go up a notch? More?
The more you BELIEVE in your solution (your product/service), the more you feel responsible to sell, share, and market your product or service with great enthusiasm and passion.
When your enthusiasm about your solution is average, or even worse, when you doubt in yourself and what you have to offer, then it reflects on your marketing efforts and your income. Your productivity as well as your revenues are low.
You have been given gifts and talents by God/Spirit/The Universe. Develop them. Believe in them and share them with the world on a bigger scale! Are you ready to make a difference in the world? You’ve already started! So why not play BIGGER? Find ways to be supported, encouraged, and guided by a coach or a mentor.
Tap into the power of your inner wisdom and re-discover this passion for your solution. Understand and feel the crucial need of your business for your potential clients. The world NEEDS you. Feel the desperation of people, their hopelessness and their readiness to change. Take your business and yourself seriously. You have a gem to give them. The more you see it, the greater your joy of service, fulfillment, and income!
Grow your conviction, your passion, and your obsession to help people, and do whatever it takes to reach people and share your solution!
You are the “key” to their problem. Find them, give them the key and reap the fruits of an abundance that you may not even have thought possible!
3 Little Marketing Mythies & The Big Good Wolf
Once upon a time, there were three little piggies disguised as marketing myths. They were not really pleasant, nor true (it was a fairy tale after all), and no one had any real sympathy for them, yet people around the world believed they were real and deserved respect.
Most people gave these piggies more importance than they should have, and that created confusion, scarcity, and anxiety in the minds of these impressed business owners.
1) “Marketing IS Serious”. He always showed the seriousness of his work, never able to gain a fresh perspective on things, or take time to laugh about himself. God knows that he could have had a big laugh as his tiny hay-house was a real joke for the Wolf!
The wolf of our story is not a “Big Bad” one; he actually resembles the info-marketers and the new generation of business coaches that we see flourishing. Always energetic, resourceful, and even playful, they belong to a new breed of entrepreneurs.
So, let’s call this wolf - the Big Good Wolf, as he helps people get a fresh new idea of what marketing truly is, by eating up these three little mythies!
The wolf approached the “Marketing IS Serious” myth, and he blew on him and laughed so hard that the tiny hay house as well as the pig-myth disappeared in the wind.
“Marketing is all about experimenting, testing, and finding what works best. It is fun and needs to be playful and not too serious in order to be most effective,” said the wolf. And on he went to chase the second myth.
2) “Aggressive and Ruthless.” He would pretend to be harsh and have no mercy, yet as soon as the Big Good Wolf came to blow his wooden house, he turned out to be the nicest piggy on Earth! This one was really a fake and a phony.
“Marketing doesn’t have to be aggressive or cutthroat. There is a different way to promote and market products and services!” said the wolf. “Sometimes it’s not even competitive! I connect with my target market or niche; I ask my customers, consumers, clients what they really want by different ways (surveys, conversations, 1-800 numbers, etc.), and I simply align my offers to their desires. It is a simple as that!”
3) “Very Complex and Elaborate”. He had used very elaborate blueprints. Everybody would show him respect because they would think that the project was more complicated, more sophisticated than it really was. This myth knew how to make people believe he was so important!
Yet, the wolf took him as easily out as he did with the other two myths.
“I use blueprints too, said the wolf. My marketing and social media plans are as simple as possible. I added nicely streamlined systems to organize follow through and manage everything smoothly. Marketing doesn’t need to be complex!”
With these reassuring words the third myth vanished into the air and everybody in the business kingdom finally came to the realization that marketing can be easy, playful, and aligned to our values and ethics!
I’ve been right where you are. I’ve experienced the worry about not having enough clients –and income- that you’re feeling now. I’ve spent (quite literally) hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars learning what it takes to market and grow a successful, thriving service business.
Sure, I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way. (Do four previous business failures count as mistakes?) But I was determined not to go back to waitressing or non-profit (no pun intended) 9-to-5 work again.

“I want to create my own business/practice, but… I am so afraid!” (part1)
I did quit my job, -“I fired my boss” as I used to say- because I had a little voice inside telling me to do so. But, at the same time, I was so afraid. I could also hear another voice inside telling me all the horrible things that might happen. These two voices were creating an inner conflict that resembled a “pas-de-deux,” a well-orchestrated dance – very smooth, like a well-oiled machine. One voice would start, and the other one would reply, then it was the first ones turn… and I was in the middle of this conversation, completely frozen, non productive and confused.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! You see, I had never run a business before, so I was definitely out of my comfort zone, not knowing what to expect. I was worried I might not be able to do it and I could hear the opinion of people around me saying that they doubted it too!
How would I attract clients to my practice? Would I have enough of them to be able to thrive …or survive? Would I go broke and not be able to pay my bills? Would I make terrible mistakes in my business decisions? What did I need to know about taxes, employment, and all the legal stuff?
Then, I stopped my inner questioning for a minute (ah, the relief!!) and decided to take a deep breath and exhale all my fears and doubts. I actually had to take way more than a couple deep breaths due to the amount of pent up anxiety. I couldn’t even think straight anymore.
I asked myself: “what do I really want now in my life?” Do I want to continue on doing what I do? Working for this boss in this environment? With this amount of stress? With this schedule? With these co-workers? Or do I want to create a business where I can help people and be my own boss? And where I can choose my hours and also (at some point) choose my clients?
“Well, if you ask me, I want to be my own boss and help people. I feel completely drawn to create a business where I can be of service and make a difference in people’s lives”. The other voice had now calmed down totally. I couldn’t hear a word of doubt or fear in my head. I could sense a strange feeling of freedom and strength, certitude and peacefulness.
That is how I decided once and for all to fire my boss and become my own boss, working from home!
And I prepared to “step out alone in the big world.” I decided to quit, but stayed a few more months to build up my savings. I could invest in myself and in my own business. I didn’t do it without a plan. (I am a Virgo, so a few things have to be organized!) I didn’t want to run out of money before the turning point when the business would be established and generate income. I did not want to be forced to make the decision to go back to work in a JOB (Just Over Broke) because my business wouldn’t bring enough income in.
That is one thing I hear in my clients stories. They share with me that they had to go back to work for someone else because they did not create a safety net before leaving and they starved during the first six months (or sometimes a year) of being in business for themselves. I think that it is a wise decision to make if you cannot withstand the financial pressure and if you start making business decisions based on fear and lack of money. You do not see marketing and management the same way when you don’t generate enough revenue. You tend to forget the business’ best interest and do not invest in yourself as you should when you run out of money!
