12 Tips for Surviving and Even Thriving This Holiday Season! (Part 1)

(Please Note - This is the first of a two-part series). Surely you’ve experienced holiday stress. You know what it looks like! Think back to last year. What did you and your family enjoy the most? The least? Do you remember how you felt on the day after Thanksgiving? How about on December 26th or January 2nd? Now think about how you would like to feel after the holidays this year. What would that look like?

Maybe you wanted to serve the perfect meal, but you didn’t have time to make that special sauce of yours. Perhaps you wanted to create an awe inspiring holiday table spread with a unique homemade centerpiece but your creativity was zapped. You wanted everything to be perfect. It was not. Are you blaming yourself now? Don’t spend one more minute in that state! Take a deep breath and exhale with a big sound of relief.

The rush of holiday travel, entertaining, shopping, buying, baking… it all creates havoc. When thoughts of gifts, cookies, greeting cards, place settings and time running out floods your mind it will steal away your enjoyment and cause you to question how you will survive yet another holiday season. Is that how you really want to spend your holiday?

If you want freedom this holiday season, try these helpful tips:

1. Remove the “shoulds” of the season: It’s easy to fall into the trap of over scheduling at this time of year. Holidays are often filled with the “shoulds” of society. Remember, just because TV commercials, radio ads or even past traditions say something should be done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s best for everyone. Be selective or the ‘suppose to do’s’ will control your holiday season.

2. Have realistic expectations and prioritize: Remember to focus on what’s really important and be realistic with what you can do with your time, energy and other resources. Quality time with family is never based on the type of tree, table settings or the other decorations. To help you prioritize ask yourself, “If I had half as much time, how would I choose to use that time?”

3. Identify what stresses you out: Take a minute and list what you find most stressful about the holidays. Include everyday stress as well. Look over the list and eliminate what you can. Do the bills need to be paid? Would you feel better if the holiday meal was planned? As you face the causes of stress on your list, the stress will melt away.

4. No Regrets: Allow the holidays to be the positive, healthy celebration they are meant to be. Avoid choices that will result in debt, diets or embarrassments. Spending beyond your means or eating past healthy boundaries may be aimed at filling an unmet need. If the holidays are a difficult time of year and you are unsure why but find yourself making choices you wish you could take back, seek guidance. Avoid falling into regrets through an unrealized attempt to compensate.

5. Take care of yourself: Healthy habits such as eating well or exercising are often abandoned when we become overwhelmed from the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Such choices leave us tired, drained and worn out. It is especially true during the holidays that you can’t give what you don’t have. This year make healthy, energy-generating habits a priority. Exercise to eliminate stress and increase stamina, limit your sugar intake and eat healthy whole foods.

6. Sleep tight: Most of us are already suffering from sleep deprivation and the holidays often take more out of us than we appreciate. After a full day of holiday activities the body and mind require sleep to recover and rejuvenate. The more the body is denied this opportunity to fully recover, the more the immune system becomes suppressed and the likelihood of illness increases. It isn’t worth getting sick. Be sure to catch enough zzz’s and get some sleep!

7 Savvy Public Speaking Survival Tips

I used to be terrified of public speaking - now it’s natural and fun.

Dry mouth, heart fluttering, sweaty palms, blank mind - yeah I’ve been there! It’s easy to be afraid of public speaking. But I was never content with simply overcoming the fear. I wanted to be a great public speaker. What I needed was a way to calm down and apply simple techniques and strategies to talk like a pro.

When I’d learned to relax (more on that later) I learned and applied the following four steps:

  1. Reassure your audience - they need to know you know your stuff and you are human!
  2. Hook them - be interesting and relevant. Tell them why what you are saying is relevant to them.
  3. Inspire them - give them information and ways of seeing that are new and applicable.
  4. Leave them on a high - tell them a story them encapsulates your central message.

How do you become confident enough to apply these four steps?

Here’s some practical advice. Some have to do with the way you think about your public presentations and others on how you can start to change the way you feel about them.

Tip One

Breathe your way to calm. When you breathe out you relax that’s why people sigh when they’re stressed.

Breathing in without breathing out causes hyperventilation and worsens anxiety. Just before your speech take five minutes and breathe in to the count of seven and out to the count of eleven (quick count-not seconds!). On the out breath, hold it a second before breathing in again. This will produce a quick and lasting calming effect. Remember extending the out breath calms you down.

Tip Two

Yes, you have a responsibility as the presenter but relax you don’t carry all the responsibility. Presenting is a team effort. Audiences are responsible for politeness, extending their attention, interacting with you and attempting to learn. It’s not all you - it’s a meeting of two halves. Never mind how they judge you. How do you judge them?

Tip Three

Speaking is really storytelling. Use metaphor and stories. We all experience life metaphorically. The most technical and logical person spends at least two hours a night dreaming! Talk details if necessary but present patterns with metaphors. People from four to 104 love stories. Use em!

Tip four

Captivate attention and engage your audience by using words that evoke all the senses. Describe how things look, sound, feel, smell and taste. Paint pictures and sensations in their minds with your words. Public speaking (like radio) is cinema of the mind.

Tip Five

Vary your voice tonality and speed of delivery. Keep them alert and engaged! Convey energy when need be and slow down when you need to ‘draw them in close.’ You are the conductor to their orchestra. And be sure to pepper your talk with humor. Your willingness to be funny shows personal confidence and confidence is contagious.

Tip Six

Tell them what you’re going to tell them (agenda). Then tell them (the body of your presentation). And then tell them what they got (conclusion/wrap it up). Don’t forget to sell your sizzle!

Tip Seven

Watch and learn from other great speakers until compelling, relaxed speaking is a part of you.

Rehearse positively. You need to rehearse how you’re going to feel as well as what you are going to present. Don’t think about your forthcoming presentation while feeling nervous, as this creates an instinctive association between fear and presenting. This natural negative self-hypnosis is very common with nervous speakers.

Hypnotically rehearse your speech while feeling relaxed. This produces the right ‘blueprint’ in your mind. In fact when you do this enough times it actually becomes hard to be nervous!

All great speakers know how to use great self-hypnotic rehearsal. Hypnosis changes attitudes and can bring emotion under control. I used hypnosis, to change my instincts around public speaking. Now I just can’t get nervous whether it’s 50 or 500 people. The world needs great communicators and is waiting to hear your words. Go for it!

Tonight, Tuesday July 7 at 2:21 AM PDT, is a Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn (15º24’). This eclipse is the first of three (July 21 and August 5) that are going to change our lives forever.

I would suggest that we go outside and find 2 sticks and then create a fire (in a bowl using epson salts and rubbing alcohol, or just light a candle). One of the 2 sticks will be a release light arrow. While holding it against your third eye, focus on all the things, situations you no longer want, blow them three times into the stick and with blessings place it into the fire. The other stick will be the attraction stick. While holding it against your third eye, focus on all the things, situations you want to manifest into your life, blow these new manifestations three times into the stick and with gratitude, place it into the fire.

The astrological significance of this eclipse is profound.

An unexpected light could be shed on circumstances we thought were only one way, revealing a multi-dimensional reality. If we recently have suffered a separation, we could come to great wisdom on why that came about, our responsibility in creating that outcome and what we had to learn from it, giving us a chance to reinvent a situation we believed was forever over.

Movement at this time, promotes growth. As we surrender to the unknown, very creative solutions to what seemed impossible could shift our whole lives in unusual ways. If we thought of moving, now comes the perfect chance to do so. If we wanted to leave a job that no longer fulfilled us, this is likely to happen now, an old relationship could turn around or a new one be created. As long as we keep our hearts clear and our intentions pure, whatever dreams we believed were unattainable, become very real now.

Patiently and diligently working on the goals and objectives that best serve our highest good is very much supported by this eclipse. As are our psychic and intuitive abilities which are likely to be greatly intensified.

As we leap with faith, powerful new doors open, leading to magical new opportunities.
